For children in grades 1 to 6, we have a more formal and structured program. It is based on a spiral curriculum in which students repeat the study of a subject at different grade levels, each time at a higher level of difficulty and in greater depth. In all the grades there is a mix of information (learning facts, memorizing prayers and tenets of the faith) and formation (praying together, attending Mass, doing service for others). We also offer a Kindergarten program.
As children become teens, we continue with a formal program, teaching the truths of our faith. At this level we move even more to learning to live our faith looking at questions of morality, charity, and much more. How does being a Catholic influence the decisions I make in my life? Prayer, service and social aspects of our formation become even more important at this age as our teens struggle to live as Catholics.
Learning the basics during grades 1-6 is a requirement to prepare for confirmation. We cannot claim our adult faith unless we first know it and understand it.
Grades 7 and 8 are a transition time – looking more deeply at our knowledge and lived experience of our faith, filling in the holes we may have missed along the way.
Grades 9 and 10 are the immediate preparation for Confirmation. We concentrate on what it means to live as an adult in the Catholic church. What are the gifts? What are the obligations? Are we ready to publically proclaim our faith?
Like any good relationship our relationship with God continues to grow and deepen as we work at it and at times struggle with it. It is not automatic but it is very possible to "go deeper" with God and with our Catholic faith. "The definitive aim of [faith formation] is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ."
